Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

One of the first and most common questions! It is also the number one reason patients hesitate to book their first appointment but don’t worry, acupuncture needling is relatively pain free!

Yes acupuncture uses needles but they are not the medical needles that you are used to. Acupuncture needles are thin, the thickness of a hair, as well they come coated so that the placement of the needles is as painless as possible.

With needle insertion you may feel a little prick, some say it is like the bite of a mosquito but after that the needles should be pain free. Some patients can feel the qi (energy) of the acupuncture point and this may feel like an ache, throb or heaviness. If it is a strong sensation just let me know and the needle can be adjusted so that you are comfortable.

After two decades of experience with needles of all shapes and sizes my needling technique is gentle. My approach is to always ensure your comfort and to make sure you are relaxed during the treatment. If you can relax into the treatment this supports bringing balance back into the body which is what acupuncture is so good at! Finding balance means activating your body’s own natural healing.

If needles during acupuncture are 100% not your thing that is ok. There are lots of other ways that Traditional Chinse Medicine can support your health. Other options include cupping, gua sha, tuina massage, ear seeds, acupressure, moxa, heat therapy and shi liao (Chinese diet therapy.
